A happening

Things don’t always go as planned, but that’s not necessarily bad.  Like last weekend.  Matthew and his girlfriend Lisa came to town.  We hadn’t met Lisa before so she may have been a little apprehensive about meeting “the parents.”  We were looking forward to meeting her and wanted to make a good impression.  So, maybe a quiet weekend would allow us to get to know each other.  If that’s what you think happened, however, you don’t know our family very well.

Since Kathy’s brother Tom would be having a birthday soon, she thought it would be nice to have him and his family over to meet Matthew and Lisa and also celebrate Tom’s birthday.  Of course, if that were planned she should see if her sister Jan and her husband wanted to drive up and join us as well.  That wouldn’t be too many people and overwhelm the new girlfriend.

Then my niece Joann told me she would be in town to deliver Girl Scout cookies we bought from her daughter Anna.  She planned to stop by at the time we already planned the “meet Lisa/Tom’s birthday” party.  That’s OK.  We told her to join us for dinner.  We would have a “meet Lisa/Tom’s birthday/Anna’s cookies” party. The more the merrier.

Since we were already having a birthday party Joann thought it would be nice to bring her mother, my sister Min, along and celebrate Min’s upcoming birthday as well.  Sounded good to us.  It would be easy to make it a “meet Lisa/Tom’s birthday/Anna’s cookies/Min’s birthday” party.

Then Joann sent me a text saying she was picking up another one of my sisters, Pat, and heading our way.  I wasn’t aware that Pat would be joining us, but great, a “meet Lisa/Tom’s birthday/Anna’s cookies/Min’s birthday/Pat’s visit” party could be a lot of fun!

When Joann reached Madison she sent me a text to say she was at her son Jim’s apartment and he would be joining us as well.  So would her other son, Anthony.  Fantastic, our original puny party had become the “meet Lisa/Tom’s birthday/Anna’s cookies/Min’s birthday/Pat’s visit/Jimmy and Anthony, too” party.

My reaction?  We experienced a happening and I can honestly say that we had a great time!  And, I think a great time was had by all.  By the way, Tom and his family also brought along their dog Bandit.  So, I guess it was really a “meet Lisa/Tom’s birthday…” well, you can take it from there. I think that Lisa handled it very well.
