Another July, another wonderful vacation on Washington Island. This year was a little different. We usually all go the same week. Due to complications from work schedules, however, this year the Sorensen branch of the Anderson clan could only make it the first week of July and some of the Sustachek branch of the Anderson clan could only make it the second week of July. Fortunately, Joann and her family took one for the group and agreed to stay for two weeks. Here are the two group shots for this year.
Kathy and I went up a day early for the second week so that we could participate in the big fish fry and sing-along with Group 1. For some reason, there has been a tendency in the past for it to rain during the fish fry. Fortunately, it didn’t rain. Unfortunately, it poured! But, the food was excellent and we finished up with a wonderful sing-along.
Despite starting our week (and others ending their week) with rain, the Island retained its warm and welcoming vibe. That was especially good this year because in addition to many regulars, the Zierten branch of the Anderson clan joined us for the first time in many, many years. It was great to see them again. Also, Kathy’s sister Jan invited up a couple of her friends for a few days. I didn’t take a survey, but it looked like most folks were having a good time.
Naturally, we all had to make it to Nelsen’s Hall, aka the “Bitters Bar.” On our first night Kathy and I didn’t leave for the bar until after midnight. Although we remember times when we closed the bar at 2, we haven’t gone out that late in millennia! Kathy even had a shot of bitters that night as well as joining the week 2 group for the incredible 24-shot event.
If you’ve never been to Washington Island, there’s probably nothing I could say that would adequately describe it. It’s the best place in the world to do nothing and still have a great time. So, here are a few more pictures just to give you a feeling.
