Okoboji

Unless you live in Iowa you’ve probably never heard of Okoboji.  It’s the kind of name that reminds me of a summer camp where kids go for a week or two in order to learn how to weave baskets and get poison ivy. Yup, Camp Okoboji would be a great name!  It’s not a camp, however, it’s a town and a lake and it’s part of The Great Lakes of Iowa.

We recently had the opportunity to spend four days and three nights in Okoboji on the scenic shores of West Okoboji Lake. Despite my preconceived and misconceived ideas about Iowa, it was a very beautiful place.  More importantly, some of Kathy’s relatives live there.  It had been much too long since they had seen them so all five Leuker siblings and various significant others (human and canine) converged upon Okoboji, Iowa for a wonderful family reunion. Various relatives (human and canine) were there to meet us. Even though I’m only an in-law (human, not canine), I still was able to have a very enjoyable time.  We were provided with exceptional accommodations and between the food that the Leukers brought along and the food that was offered by our hosts, we were very well fed indeed.

Despite, or more likely because of, the heat and humidity, many of the group took advantage of West Okoboji Lake to swim, boat (once the correct “light switch” was located), try to jet ski, and watch sunsets.  We also had a relaxing repast at Fisherman’s Wharf.  When not in the lake or at the dinner table, the humans interacted with the canines (two big ones and three small ones) or played games.  The photos below capture only a small amount of the fun that was had by all.  Naturally, one of the images is the obligatory group photo.
