The dog days of summer

According to Wikipedia (and they don’t lie), dog days are “the hottest, most sultry days of summer in late August.” If you live in Wisconsin (or many other places in the Midwest) you know the kind of weather I’m talking about.  Cold beer bottles seem to wring water from the air faster than you can consume the contents.  And, dressing after emerging from a nice cool shower is all it takes to make you hot and sweaty again.

There are times, however, when the phrase dog days takes on a whole new meaning.  Like last weekend.  We went up north to relax for a few days and celebrate a couple of birthdays and an anniversary.  Among the guests was a dapper gentleman dressed in black (not the best color for August) who went by the name of Bandit.  Despite the heat he really knew how to keep his cool. Everyone was impressed with his daring dive off the pier into the lake.  Despite his shaggy exterior, he was popular with all of the guests, especially the women. I was never that popular when I was shaggy! He soaked up the attention while remaining appropriately aloof. I’m going to have to talk to that guy and find out what his secret is.
