When does 28 = 3?

Small towns in Northern Wisconsin are known for their fishing, forests, and friendliness. They are not, however, known for their abilities in mathematics. How else can you explain a town that boasts of its location on a chain of 28 lakes being named Three Lakes? If you go there they’ll tell you why, but I don’t want to ruin the surprise for you. This is not really about the town, it’s about our Memorial Day weekend.

For about a month before our trip, there were 2 or 3 phone calls a day about the proposed menu. What was Jan going to bring? What was Kathy going to bring? What was Mary Ann going to bring? What was Pat going to forget? It’s amazing how much planning goes into a 3-day, 2-night vacation! But it was worth it. After arriving and unpacking all of the food, our first outing was to the Three Lakes Winery. You can get real wines like Cabearnay Savingyoung as well as lots of great fruity wines. The best part is that you can taste a lot for free.

After the winery we returned to the cabin to relax before dinner.  (Note:  relaxing = sitting around drinking wine.)  Jan and Joe cooked chicken and shrimp and vegies on the grill.  We all ate our fill.  Although the weather was a bit cool, the sun was shining brightly, so we took a brief post-dinner walk. Then, with appetites renewed, we returned to the cabin for cake.  Jan bought a cake for a belated celebration of Kathy’s 65th birthday.

Sunday was a grueling day.  We started with made-to-order omelets filled with the diner’s choice of onions, green peppers, and/or cheese with exotic Nueskes Bacon on the side.  After allowing adequate time to digest a bit we continued our tour of Three Lakes and its environs.  We stopped at Polarski Cedar Products and visited a quiet, modest woman who makes the most incredible furniture.  Since I know nothing about woodworking or furniture, I’ll have to leave it to a couple of photos to show you her work.  Then we stopped at a local furniture store where… [Editors note: In the interest of maintaining the dignity of this high class web site, the rest of this sentence has been censored].  After the police chased us from the furniture store we visited some friends of Jan and Joe and enjoyed a nice pontoon boat ride around one of the lakes.  The 27 other lakes will have to wait for a future visit. Although none of us was very hungry, that did not prevent us from enjoying a luscious Italian meal cooked by none other than Mama Sustacheckini!  Bombers — Italian sausages on buns with marinara sauce and, for those with good taste, banana peppers — were served with stuffed noodles.  As we ate we savored some wine and imagined the wonderful salad we would have had if Pat had not left it at home.

Sadly, we had to leave on Monday.  First, of course, we had a very filling breakfast of waffles made to order by Dennis.  Not just waffles, but waffles with leftovers of 417 different things from our previous meals.  Then we hit the road.  In summary, we had a fabulous time thanks to Jan and Joe’s hospitality.  Now that I think of it, I really should correct my opening sentence.  Small towns in Northern Wisconsin are known for their fishing, forests, friendliness, and food.
