I’m in trouble because it’s been so long since I posted anything new here. A few weeks ago I even got a call from Florida complaining that my site was getting old! Granted, that was just my sister Mary Ann, who likes to bug me. She was visiting our cousing Leah, whom I haven’t seen in years, and they were looking for news from the Madison Andersons. Now, my usual reaction when a sister asks me to do something is to sit around for a few weeks doing nothing. So, now that the few weeks are done I decided to finally add something new here. Note that it has nothing to do with any of my sisters.

About six weeks ago I replied to a request from the School of Music for a volunteer to photograph some of their rehearsals and concerts. They’re starting to revise their web site and are in need of current photos for that project. Also, they will soon need photos to use in print materials they’ll be preparing for the 2013-2014 school year. Photography is one of my favorite hobbies but I have almost no experience taking pictures of events like this. I usually wander around taking landscape or other nature photos and most of the time my subjects only move on a geologic time scale. But, now that I’m retired I thought it would be fun to try something new.
Kathy Esposito, the School of Music Public Relations and Concert Manager, didn’t seem concerned about my lack of experience with the subject matter and arranged to have me attend some classes and rehearsals. I’ve done a few concerts as well but one of the goals was to get some photos that were more casual and fun than what might be obtained at concerts. From my perspective, this also allowed me to walk around and get different views than I could get at a concert. And, I wouldn’t have to worry about getting in the way of the audience.
So, here are some images I made in the past month in classrooms, dress rehearsals, and concerts. One rehearsal was for a group of singers and dancers. With the added movement and the lights set lower than normal, that was the most challenging event so far.
