Things to think about before Nov 6

Sorry to bother you with politics, but the attacks and counterattacks in recent ads can be confusing, so here are some things to think about before you vote on November 6.

1:  We’re told that this is the slowest economic recovery since the great depression.  That may be, but remember that we’re in the biggest economic downturn since the great depression, so why would you expect anything else?  The deeper the hole, the longer it takes to fill it back up.

2:  We’re told that President Obama’s policies have failed.  Note, however, that Republicans have publicly stated that their number one goal is to make Obama fail and they’ve blocked the majority of the President’s proposals, so how can you blame the current state of the economy on the President?  Failure is the Republican’s goal, not the President’s.

3:  We’re told that the country is going backwards.  Data show that job creation plummeted under President George W. Bush but has improved steadily since early in President Obama’s administration.  You could say that’s backwards compared to Bush, but that’s the way we want to go.  If you think things aren’t improving fast enough, please reread #1.

4:  We’re told that cutting taxes is the way to balance the budget.  Ronald Reagan tried that and failed; George H. W. Bush tried that and failed; George W. Bush tried that and failed.  Why would you think that Romney’s attempt will succeed?  The Republican goal is not to balance the budget; it is to create debt that can be used as an excuse to get rid of programs they don’t like.

The great American journalist H. L. Mencken once said, “For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.”  There is no better description for Romney’s plans than clear, simple, and wrong.
