Harboring thoughts of the holidays

When I lived in Portland I accepted the fact that white was not an adjective often used with Christmas. I think we had one white Christmas in 25 years. But, now that I’m back in Wisconsin I feel that I am entitled to a Whitechristmas.  I realize that Thanksgiving was early this year and it won’t be December for 2 more days, but I am having trouble getting into the spirit of the season.  That’s in spite of the fact that I started the season the morning after Thanksgiving by playing my all-time favorite Christmas album, John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together!

Kathy and I walked down by the lake this afternoon.  In addition to large numbers of Canada geese and coots, we could see one loon searching for food.  With her omnipresent binoculars Kathy spotted a few swans in the distance.  This is certainly a sign of the season.  Birds that love to spend their summers up north like to stop in the Madison lakes on their way down south.  It’s that time of year.

When we arrived at the harbor I was surprised to see that it was almost completely covered with ice.  I’m not sure how thick it was but some Canada geese walked on the edge of the ice while others swam in the adjacent lake.  So, it was at least strong enough to support the geese.  Without a telephoto lens it was difficult to get a very good shot but hopefully the images below will give you an idea of what the harbor was like.

I could still use a little snow to get me in the holiday spirit but at least the start of ice on the lake has helped a little.
