Money saving travel tips

On a recent trip to Death Valley, Kathy and I found ways to keep our travel expenses down. We thought we’d share them with you.

Avoid the big expensive airlines. Small local carriers, like crop dusters and airshow stunt pilots, offer real bargains. Landings may be a little rough but the savings are worth it.

If you watch for deals, however, you might save money even with big name companies. We rented this beauty from Hurts Rent-a-Car!

Look at how great the visibility is without that pesky wind shield!

Using local mass transit is also a money-saving idea. Prison buses and school buses are great alternatives to rental cars. Just be careful where you get out.

Instead of Holiday Inns or Hiltons, look for small mom-and-pop motels like this one.

Some motels even include special room service! Apparently cats are allowed at this one though I’m not sure about dogs.

After a long day, local establishments can often provide exotic microbrews that can’t be found elsewhere. Most of all, just relax and have a great time, but please do watch out for that tortoise in the road!

In case you’re curious, these photos were taken in the following locations:

1 and 4 — The old mining town of Nelson, Nevada.

2, 3, 5, and 7 — Beatty, Nevada, the Gateway to Death Valley!

6 — Pahrump, Nevada, your Basecamp to Adventure!
