This song just leaped into my head while I was in the shower one morning in the summer of 2001. It was obviously inspired at that time by the upcoming wedding of my sister-in-law Jan Leuker.
1. Come and listen to my story ’bout a gal named Jan.
Had most everything, all she wanted was a man.
After years of lookin’ ’round she gave up but don’t you know,
Then into her life came a fella name of Joe. Orth that is…nice guy…worked downstairs…
2. Well Joe said to Jan “Would you like to have a date?”
But Jan said to Joe “You know I think it’s kind of late.
I’ve dated other men but I never got the rice,
So I live all alone — if you don’t count all the mice.” Furry things…beady eyes…
3. Then Joe said to Jan “You know I’m not like all the rest.
And unlike the mice, I will never be a pest.
And just so you know what I really sorta wish.
I’m looking for a friend who just likes to golf and fish.” Up North…Door County…
4. So Jan began to think could this really be the one?
At first she wasn’t sure, then she started having fun.
And then one day we were all just eating cake,
When Jan let us know Joe was moving to the Lake. Wedding bells…Champagne!!!
5. Now the moral of the story for you other Jan and Joes
Is the person that your seekin’ might be underneath your nose.
Though I hate to end this song with a message that’s so sappy,
Remember life is short so you might as well be happy. Like Jan…and Joe…
